Southwark Council launches local festive shopping scheme

Southwark Council launches local festive shopping schemePeople in flats to rent in Southwark are to be encouraged to shop locally this Christmas with a number of promotional events being launched by the council.

In partnership with the Creation Trust and Peckham Space, Southwark Council will be running various markets, demonstrations, giveaways and other events to help boost local traders over the coming weeks.

Over the course of December, East Street, North Cross Road, The Blue and Camberwell Green will all host their own Christmas markets, allowing shoppers to choose from a wide range of festive goods, as well as enjoying family fun in the form of face painting, bouncy castles and Santa's grottos.

Elsewhere, Peckham Space will play host to an exhibition of specially commissioned artwork at the Through the Peckham Glass show, while street performers will be popping up across Southwark to entertain passersby with songs, comedy, dancing and magic.

Complementing these events will be a number of special promotions, including the offer of free parking in all council-run car parks over the weekends, including the facilities at Choumert Grove, Copeland Road and Peckham Town Centre, as well as the Stead Street car park serving East Street Market.

Meanwhile, themed shopping bags for life will be available to Walworth, Nunhead and Peckham locals, while Walworth will also set up gift wrapping stations where customers can have their Christmas presents wrapped up for them by members of the Creation Trust, in exchange for a charity donation.

Fiona Colley, cabinet member for regeneration at Southwark Council, said this will help to support businesses that were disrupted earlier this year by the riots that affected many parts of London.

She added: "From art tours to local entertainers to fantastic Christmas markets, there is something for everyone and every reason to stay local to get your Christmas shopping done this year."
