Southwark art haven to receive cash boost
The Southwark neighbourbood could soon see its cultural credentials raised further as one of its most famous features gets a huge funding boost.
The Tate Modern museum, situated opposite St Paul's Cathedral on the south bank of the Thames, is set for a government grant of £50 million – which it will use to expand its gallery space.
Featuring a design that fails to hide its history as a power station, the Tate Modern has defied prejudice and become an artistic jewel on the South Bank, attracting many visitors with its free entry and wide range of artwork.
Tate director Nicholas Serota said that with the new cash injection futuristic expansions could take place, making the gallery an even more popular London feature.
James Purnell, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport, said: "I know that this new development, which we hope will be completed in time for 2012, will prove once and for all that London is the cultural capital of the world."
