Music classes 'boosting development of London children'
Schools in the London boroughs of Newham and Southwark have been praised for their provision of music lessons to pupils.
Children at St Bonaventure's RC School in Newham, as well as at Southwark's Alfred Salter Primary School, were found by Ofsted to be benefiting in particular.
The 'Making more of music' report revealed that pupils were developing personally as well as musically as a result of the classes, with enhanced self-esteem and improved results across all subject areas.
Chief inspector Christine Gilbert remarked: "Music can have a big impact on pupils' personal development and students enjoy taking part," adding that more should be done to ensure national initiatives benefit those who need them most.
Earlier this week a study by the Institute for Social and Economic Research at Essex University revealed that changes introduced to school meals by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver had helped improve pupils' attainment in Greenwich.
