Mayor pledges outer London investment
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has called for greater investment to be made in the capital's outer boroughs.
Speaking ahead of today's inaugural meeting of the Outer London Commission, he said that unlocking the potential of these areas could help boost the city as a whole.
"We are facing challenging economic times so it is imperative that we do everything we can to strengthen and diversify the capital's economy," Mr Johnson remarked.
He explained that 160,000 businesses are currently operating in outer boroughs - including Harrow and Ealing - and that these employ more than 1.6 million people.
But the mayor pledged to create more jobs by encouraging new firms as well as nurturing the existing ones.
Today's meeting at City Hall is the first of six due to take place before the commission delivers a preliminary report in June.
Among its aims is the identification of five areas that will act as growth hubs, with the objective of discovering best practice that can be applied elsewhere.
