Mayor pledges investment for training of residents of property in London
Londoners will be able to obtain qualifications for working in transport under a new multi-million pound plan unveiled by the mayor.
Boris Johnson is giving £8 million to the Crossrail Tunnelling Academy, due to open in 2011, to allow people to train in the field of engineering.
He explained that Crossrail construction, as well as investment by Transport for London (TFL) in the Tube network, is set to help offset the effects of the downturn.
"Engineering can provide a huge and vital economic boost and help London become the true engineering capital of Europe," Mr Johnson remarked.
Peter Hendy of TFL also noted that skilled workers are in demand, which may be of interest to those living in property in Camden who are looking for work.
The plan is for Crossrail to train 1,000 people by 2015.
Meanwhile, a deal between Crossrail and Bechtel Ltd is expected to generate as many as 14,000 jobs.
The £400 million contract will see Bechtel dealing with the design and delivery of part of the tunnelled Crossrail route.
