London waste 'could power millions of homes'
Two million homes could be powered, while 625,000 households could have heat from the 22 million tonnes of waste which are produced in the capital, it has been claimed.
And the London Assembly Environment Committee has claimed carbon emissions in the city could be reduced by some 1.2 million tonnes, which would be a step towards Mayor Boris Johnson's targets.
However, currently most London waste is taken out of the city and buried on landfill sites, which the committee stated is no longer sustainable.
As a result, the group has urged that it is time London had an alternative strategy for managing its non-recyclable waste in the form of waste to energy conversion.
This may prompt those looking for flats to rent in Notting Hill or another part of London to take steps to ensure they recycle or reuse their belongings.
Jenny Bates, London campaigner for Friends of the Earth, said: "To relieve pressure on the world's finite resources and help tackle climate change we should be reusing and recycling as much as possible."
