Lambeth residents to have a say on housing strategy

Lambeth residents to have a say on housing strategyLocal councillors are calling for opinions to inform new plans to create more homes and flats to rent in Lambeth over the coming years.

A consultation has been launched this month that aims to collect views on key priorities for housing among Lambeth residents, a process that will be completed at the end of the year.

The new Lambeth Housing Strategy will cover the period between 2012 and 2016 and has been drafted in its current state through discussions with key stakeholder groups.

Among the prominent issues highlighted by the report include the need to create high-quality and affordable homes for families and young people, as well as improving the standard of council housing in the region.

It will also aim to deliver well-designed neighbourhoods and properly maintained streets, with a commitment to helping residents feel safe and secure around their local area.

This new consultation also ties in with Lambeth Council's desire to be the UK's first "cooperative council", with control over service provision and local strategy placed in the hands of the people.

As such, it will be conducting continued discussions with interested residents via its Facebook page in order to ensure services are delivered in the areas they are most needed.

"We are seeking your help in focusing these priorities to ensure that our limited resources are used appropriately over the next four years," the council said.

This comes after the authority announced the launch of a new environmental improvement scheme earlier this month, which will be targeted at the Vassall, Oval, Stockwell, Herne Hill Coldharbour, Ferndale, Larkhall and Clapham Old Town wards.

It will encompass initiatives such as the introduction of road safety schemes, improving cycle parking, planting trees and removing street clutter, such as needless bollards, railings and signs.

A series of meetings with local residents will be taking place to discuss the plans in the coming weeks.
