Ken re-installs wind turbines
Wind turbines are to be reinstated on the London Development Agency's rooftop, as mayor of London Ken Livingstone seeks to promote green energy and lead by example.
A year ago trial turbines were removed from the Palestra building and a reduced number are now being re-installed, despite claims that the scheme will only waste money.
In November 2006 turbines were installed and provided energy for their building over a six-week period, after which manufacturer Renewable Devices withdrew them due to a component failure.
Some fourteen new Swift II wind turbines, using re-engineered software and a different design, have now been re-installed on the advice of the London Climate Change Agency, altering the skyline of the Blackfriars Road area and boosting its renewable energy claims.
In 2006 the Ken Livingstone said that the wind turbine scheme "demonstrates my commitment for the Greater London Authority organisations to lead the way in taking measures to tackle climate change through reducing carbon emissions".
But with a cost of £436,000, it is feared that the re-installation may end up costing more than it will gain in green energy production.
