Enfield food production scheme revealed
People living in flats to rent in Enfield are being urged by the council to get involved in a new scheme to make the borough the biggest fruit and vegetable producer in the capital.
Through the initiative, Enfield Council hopes to provide dozens of new growing sites, which include Capital Growth growing areas for local residents.
In addition, organisers hope it will encourage children to establish vegetable gardens in schools.
A community food pilot scheme is to be set up to help residents grow, prepare and sell fresh food, while training courses will also be arranged.
Meanwhile, the council is looking to introduce restrictions on new fast food outlets near schools and work with existing ones to reduce the fat and salt content in their meals.
Cabinet member for business and regeneration Councillor Del Goddard said: "We want to revolutionise the way we grow fruit and vegetables in Enfield and get the whole community involved in growing, cooking and eating their own food."
Last month, the council revealed Ponders End Recreation Ground is going to be transformed as part of a £997,000 project.
