Consultation launched on new efforts to transform Tottenham
People inhabiting flats to rent in Tottenham are being called upon to share their opinions on new efforts to transform the area into a more pleasant and affluent place to live.
Haringey Council has launched a consultation this week that encourages local residents to come forward with ideas and priorities for improvements in the area, following the outbreak of civil unrest in August 2011.
Feedback from Tottenham locals given thus far has outlined a number of key issues, such as the need for high quality homes, improved public transport and spaces, greater regional investment and healthier businesses.
Safety and security was also noted as a key focus area, with the Haringey authority set to consider how to build on these priorities to bolster pride and vibrancy in the Tottenham area.
Numerous measures have already been taken to strengthen the community since the riots, with the council offering advice on housing and support to businesses affected during the period.
Meanwhile, the I Love Tottenham campaign was launched earlier this year to create a sense of local pride, with further programmes set to continue in the run-up to Christmas to keep the High Road thriving.
For example, it was announced earlier this month that free parking will be offered in local car parks until the end of January 2012, a move that is designed to encourage people to shop in Tottenham throughout the Christmas and new year periods.
Alan Strickland, cabinet member for economic development and social inclusion at Haringey Council, said it has already spoken to hundreds of residents and traders, which will help to inform long-term strategy.
"We are determined to work with local communities and businesses to make sure Tottenham can emerge stronger and better with a thriving economy and neighbourhood people are proud to call home," he added.
