Camden regeneration requires 'integrity'
Regeneration of Camden Lock Market must be carried out with "integrity," the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has said.
A fire swept through the popular alternative culture district on Sunday evening, sending flames leaping 30 ft into the sky and destroying hundreds of stalls, several shops and a popular pub - but causing no injuries.
The eclectic shopping district's owners, Camden Market Holdings, immediately vowed to rebuild the site as quickly as possible, but the FSB has urged development to remain faithful to the distinctive character of the borough.
FSB London regional chairman Laurie Payne said that the rapid resumption of trading will only be welcomed by the 300 small business owners who livelihoods hang in the balance if they are involved in the process.
"The re-development should take place in consultation with the stallholders and should not be seen as a chance to shoehorn in anything that would go against their needs and those of both the Camden community and the hundreds of thousands of tourists who come to visit this unique area each week," Mr Payne commented.
Camden Council has already opened Lock Market for limited service business.
