Aylesbury regeneration moves forward
The regeneration of South-East London's Aylesbury Estate has moved one step closer to fruition, with the naming of the housing association tasked with developing the site.
Southwark Council has granted the contract to the London and Quadrant (L&Q) Group, which will now outline a series of design proposals for the 260 new homes and public service facilities.
The Aylesbury estate is an OFT-cited example of urban decline in the capital and was even singled out by Tony Blair in his first speech as prime minister in 1997.
Since then it has received significant media attention and the latest announcement by Southwark Council will see the area on track to start on-site regeneration this autumn, with development slated to be completed by 2013.
"We look forward to working in partnership with the council and the local community to bring about real and positive change for residents," said Don Wood, chief executive of the L&Q Group. "Our approach to regeneration is to improve the quality of life for residents in London's more deprived neighbourhoods."
