Canary Wharf set to 'go green'
The Canary Wharf Group has confirmed that it is joining forces with the mayor of London and the Clinton Climate Initiative to increase the environmental credentials of one of London's leading financial districts.
Canary Wharf now rivals London's traditional financial centre, the Square Mile, as the leading business district in the capital and is synonymous with major commercial developments and up-market professional rental accommodation.
But with the government attaching ever-more importance to meeting sustainability targets as the problem of global warming gathers pace, the development firm that owns Canary Wharf has now announced it is singing up to mayor Ken Livingstone's Better Building Partnership.
Chief executive George Iacobescu said his company's commitment constituted an exciting prospect for both public and private sector developers and would set an example for other developers around the country.
"Canary Wharf Group recognises the importance of sustainability both in terms of construction and ongoing user of buildings," Mr Iacobescu remarked. "We want to ensure that we are at the forefront of green construction and can lead the industry in this field."
Mayor Livingstone last month unveiled a plan to cut carbon emissions from the capital's public buildings by up to 25 per cent.
