Area Comments
If you're lucky enough to be actively considering living in the Green Park area, you're one of a privileged few. This is a supremely genteel and upscale area of London, with effortless charm, an urban garden community of the most well-heeled sort.
Green Park itself is one of the loveliest and least-known of London Parks (and if you feel like a change, Hyde Park and Regents Park are not far away). Nestled in the shadow of Mayfair, the favourite walking spot of the staff of the many nearby embassies that fringe Piccadilly, it's a joy in summer and winter alike. Those who live nearby are likely to be some of the wealthiest in the capital, and are placed right by the pick of London's nightlife, cuisine, shopping and culture. You could easily pop for tea at the Ritz (just two minutes walk away), bye a tie from the famous store of Thomas Pink, visit an art gallery or two, drop into BAFTA, browse Fortnum & Masons for a hamper which you could then sit beside in the loveliness of the park, feeling justified in your gentle ease, before popping out to see a play in any one of dozens of theatres nearby, before a swift and perfect cocktail.
Respectability oozes from the beautiful bricks and stonework of Green Park area houses. This is the preserve of the urban mansion, townhouses of huge size and grand opulence in red brick and stone, Victorian and Georgian mini-palaces, lining the routes into Mayfair and the edge of the park itself, which is bounded by Piccadilly. Many are leased by major corporations as well as being occupied by embassies. The St James and Mayfair areas are filled with properties owned by the Grosvenor Estate (IE the Duke of Westminster); by living here, you are living in the centre of establishment Britain. Those who can afford to live here are looking for the best in apartments and flats - which range from some small (and very definitely bijou) to extraordinary penthouses. There are a tiny, tiny number of houses in this market, found in the very London mews areas and small collections of cottages that are sandwiched prettily between vast, many-storeyed mansions. These are very popular with bankers and City workers who find it simple to hop on the Jubilee Line at Green Park station, and then are whisked into the City or Canary Wharf.
Just wandering the Green Park area gives off the heady feel of the high class and the beautiful. The buildings radiate the status they convey on their owners. If you have the ability and opportunity to purchase the (usually short) leases, then you should consider acting very fast indeed.
