Area Comments
One of the most historic, culturally mixed and defiantly residential of Central West London's districts, Bayswater provides fantastic access to the centre of town as well as some of the most desirable places to live. For the trendy, wealthy and upwardly mobile professional there are few more pleasant places to make your base.
Westbourne Grove and Queensway are the dominant features of life in Bayswater - with the Whiteleys Shopping Centre on Queensway providing a social an economic centre for the area. At one time, the Westbourne Grove area had a slightly shabby feel, but any dingyness is long in the past now; instead, Westbourne Grove features some of the best and most varied dining and socialising haunts - bars, clubs and pubs - in London.
Property in Bayswater is amongst the best in London, especially in terms of flats and apartments. The striking Georgian terraces which comprise the majority of its housing have mostly been long-subdivided into upscale apartments; during much of the 20th Century these had a kind of faded and shabby charm, but this has long been replaced with a level of refitting and luxury which you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else comparable in town. Bayswater apartments are amongst the best-appointed around. There are houses to be found in Bayswater, but these are few and far between, and would fall to the very upper end of most buyers' budgets: luxurious townhouses do exist, but their price befits the area's fashionable status, its proximity to town and to other fashionable areas such as Kensington or Notting Hill, the ease of access to London's best parks (Holland Park and Hyde Park are a convenient walk away), as well as the size and imposing nature of the properties themselves.
Socially Bayswater has a distinct advantage from the off as it has a strong multicultural signature, which is bolstered by the young, trendy and fashionable. Its fantastic shopping facilities (Whiteleys is only the start, being the base of many of the big-name brands in the area, which also features some of the best in independent design, fashion and collectables), eating and social venues ensure a steady influx of the beautiful people, but what's brilliant about Bayswater is for much of the week, it's a quiet and steady place to be. The crowds rarely venture here, because although attractive, it isn't a centre for tourists - who tend towards Kensington, Notting Hill or Camden - and life is lived quietly and peacefully.
If you want the best of London's eating and nightlife, the best of its access, but none of its headaches - and if you can afford it - Bayswater is an area you must look into.
