Those seeking flats in Merton may enjoy Wombling time
People looking for property to rent in the London borough of Merton could enjoy re-living a part of their childhood as the council is considering naming a street in honour of Wombles creator Elisabeth Beresford, who died aged 84 last month.
This could lead to a street on a new housing development in the borough having a name like Wombling Way or Orinoco Drive, the Wimbledon Guardian reports.
A council spokesperson has said this is being considered and such a move may lead to someone renting a home in the area being on or close to such a lane.
The pioneering work of the author in raising environmental issues through the recycling work of the Wombles was praised by co-ordinator of environmental group Sustainable Merton Tom Walsh.
He said of Ms Bersford's work: "I think it was a clever way of getting the message across that wasn't invasive."
Renting may be popular in the borough after it was recently revealed to contain Britain's most expensive street.
A study by Lloyds TSB found the average home on Parkside is £5,058,000.
