Tenants 'should protect their deposits'
People preparing to secure and move into a rented property - particularly young people getting ready to head to university - have been advised to make sure their deposit is protected.
Malcolm Harrison, spokesperson for the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, said that students should make sure they are certain of the people they will be sharing with and that they will not find themselves left "in the lurch" financially.
"They need to actually ask the landlord for details of where the deposit is and the fact that it has been registered," he added.
And in advice that may prove useful to students looking for flats to rent in Shoreditch or another London borough, Mr Harrison added that people would most likely be jointly responsible for the property.
Communities and Local Government recently published proposals aimed at giving the tenants of financially unstable landlords more rights.
The new laws would see tenants entitled to stay in a property for two months after the house is repossessed, if the landlord has failed to inform their lender that they are letting out the property.
