Sutton Council launches internet access drive
People in flats to rent in the London borough of Sutton are among those being encouraged to reduce the digital divide.
Sutton Council has become one of the first authorities in the capital to join the campaign started by internet entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox to get every adult in the UK online by 2012.
Around 35,000 people in Sutton are estimated to have never been on the internet and the local authority is now formulating plans to reduce this number.
Ruth Dombey, Sutton Council's executive member for community engagement and customer services, commented: "Maybe we take it for granted that everyone is on the internet but there are a considerable number who do not have access to the web - and they are missing out."
The council will promote web access to those in flats to rent in the London borough of Sutton by making computers available in the area's libraries and civil offices, as well as offering more training to young people.
Earlier this month, the authority revealed that more than 20,000 people visited the new public library at Sutton Life Centre during the first three months it was open.
