Sutton children leading the green revolution
People living in property to rent in Sutton may be interested to hear that children in the area are showing the rest of the capital how to be more environmentally friendly.
In Transport for London's school accreditation scheme - which recognises those that encourage sustainable transport - nine of Sutton's education institutions have achieved the top gold award, with a further nine recognised with silver.
Out of the 33 London boroughs, only 72 schools have been granted gold status, meaning nearly 15 per cent of the top performing schools are in Sutton.
Camden Junior School was crowned the best school in South-West London for its plans to cut car journeys and reduce carbon emissions.
The school has already halved the number children who travel there by car and trained two teachers to provide cycling lessons to pupils and parents.
It also helps the children learn about bike security and organises competitions and lunchtime bike rides.
Simon Wales, executive member for communities, transport and the voluntary sector on Sutton Council, said: "There are great benefits to walking to school, so it's really good news that Sutton is leading the way in encouraging sustainable transport.
"As well as boosting health and fitness levels, walking or cycling to school can help children to develop valuable road safety skills and a knowledge of their local area," he added.
Earlier this week, 23 businesses in Sutton were given a five-star rating in a new food standards scheme.
