Shoreditch Light Bar will be preserved
One of London's most iconic landmarks is set to be preserved, in news which may please people looking for flats to rent in Shoreditch.
The 19th-century building is set to act as an entrance to a new development in the borough.
A new complex of offices, hotel and housing within a skyscraper will be built on the land but following a campaign by locals, the Light Bar, which once generated electricity for the Great Eastern Railway when Liverpool Street station opened, will be accommodated in the plans.
The East London Advertiser reports that the red brick building will remain in its current guise as a bar, while the facade will be cleaned and restored.
Meanwhile, the Hackney Gazette recently reported that plans are underway to build a new theatre on the site of a 1576 playhouse.
The Tower Theatre Company hopes to create a no-frills 21st-century equivalent of the original theatre.
