Regulating letting agents would make sense, says expert
A leading property expert has suggested that steps to regulate Letting Agents in the UK would "make sense".
Chris Horne, editor of Property Hawk, agreed with property ombudsman Christopher Hamer's calls to improve protection for landlords and tenants who use Letting Agents.
Mr Horne said that many landlords who employ agents may not necessarily know if they are part of a trade body and may be subject to different codes of conduct.
Furthermore, he felt that legislation governing the action of those liasing with both tenants and landlords and those looking at renting property was already heading towards uniform regulation.
"The way that the letting industry has changed and increased over the last ten years, there is a demand now for some kind of uniform approach and a way of measuring the conduct of Letting Agents ... is probably the way things should go."
However, Mr Horne commented that many complaints would probably centre on "accidental landlords" who rented out property after failing to sell at a reasonable price, simply due to inexperience.
Moves to improve protection for tenants dealing with Letting Agents may interest people looking for property to rent in the London borough of Hackney, or elsewhere in the UK.
