Newham teenagers elect Young Mayor
People living in property to rent in Newham may be interested to hear that more than 10,000 young people from across the borough cast their vote and elected their new Young Mayor.
The winner, 15-year-old Abraham Male, a pupil at Beckton's Kingsford Community School, will be in office when the Olympic and Paralympic Games arrive next summer.
He won the election on his manifesto to promote the 2012 Olympic values of determination and excellence.
In addition, he promised to spread the message about the positive impact young people can make.
His deputy will be 16-year-old Wendy Zadigue, who volunteers for Canning Town charity Community Links.
The other candidates will form the Youth Council, who will support and advise the mayor and his deputy.
"I'm so overwhelmed at being elected Young Mayor," Abraham remarked. "Young people are important for the future of Newham and it's so important with the Olympic Games next year their voices are heard."
Previous Young Mayors have been involved in delivering Newham's joint Olympic Stadium Bid to Downing Street, as well as campaigning for young people to be involved in volunteering opportunities during the Games.
Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales was full of praise for everyone who took part in the election.
"I'm so proud of the Young Mayor Scheme," he said. "Every Young Mayor that has been elected has been brilliant and we have seen a steady increase in young people taking part in the elections since we started. It's great to see so many young people passionate about making a difference to their area."
The Olympic Games run from July 27th to August 12th next year, with the Paralympic Games taking place between August 29th and September 9th.
