New sports pitches for children living in property in Newham
A new sporting facility has opened in the London borough of Newham, offering young residents the chance to participate in a range of activities.
Mayor of the area Sir Robin Wales opened the £2.8 million venue along with former England footballer Sir Trevor Brooking.
The mayor explained that children living in property in Stratford and across Newham are being invited to use the facility, as the borough continues its attempts to encourage sporting involvement.
"Sport is a great way to meet people, break down social barriers and an investment in yourself," he said. "Together we'll give unhealthy lifestyles the boot."
The Memorial Park venue features a floodlit synthetic turf pitch, while existing grass pitches have been improved and two new changing pavilions have been built.
Last month, Newham Council announced that it would be tackling anti-social behaviour by introducing controlled drinking zones in Stratford town centre and the Woodgrange Road area of Forest Gate.
