Landlords 'should present tenants with gas certificate'
An average of 40 deaths a year could be avoided by taking the time to ensure that a property's central heating has been serviced, it has been stated.
Confused.com, using research from Carbon Monoxide and Gas Safety Society, has noted that between 1995 and 2009, there have been over 550 deaths in the UK as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com, said: "As the cold weather kicks in, it's good practice to make sure that you have an up to date gas safety certificate. This is a legal requirement in rental properties but should be considered essential for all households."
With this in mind, people looking for property to rent in Shoreditch or another borough of London may wish to ask their would-be landlord to show them this certificate before they move in.
Tenants may also be interested to hear that should their landlord schedule a boiler service, it must be carried out by an engineer who is a member of the Gas Safe Register.
