Greenwich schools to receive early funding boost
Schools in Greenwich are to benefit from an announcement in the pre-Budget report that funding will be brought forward.
The borough, along with a number of other local authorities in England - including several in London - has been selected to receive money through the Primary Capital Programme early.
A total of £800 million had been earmarked for programmes in 2010-11 but it is now to be awarded 12 months sooner than originally planned.
The local authorities concerned are now being asked to identify schools that should be refurbished using the funding, which will be made available in April of next year.
Children's secretary Ed Balls remarked: "This decision means that building or refurbishment projects, particularly in primaries, already costed, designed and ready to go can now start as soon as possible."
In June it was revealed that the London borough of Hounslow is one of the local authorities that will be fast-tracked for the government's Building Schools for the Future programme.
