Funding boost for Olympic village and media centres
Funding to aid in the building of the Olympic Village and media centres has been welcomed.
The government has announced that £326 million has been made available for the village, while a shortfall in funding for the international broadcast and main press centres of £135 million has been met.
Olympics minister Tessa Jowell explained that the additional money will come from the 2012 Games' existing £9.3 billion budget, noting that the investment will continue to benefit Londoners after the event.
And the Trades Union Congress praised the move, stating that the press and broadcast centre - based in Hackney - is "exactly the kind of ambitious project" that should be receiving funding.
"This will provide first-class facilities during the Olympics and high-quality jobs for many years after the games have finished," said general secretary Brendan Barber.
The village is expected to be the home of as many as 17,000 athletes during the Olympics, with more than 6,000 staying there during the Paralympic Games.
