Flats to rent 'could provide alternative homes' during housing undersupply
People in the UK could be encouraged to consider flats to rent in the London borough of Lewisham as there is an undersupply of housing in the UK, it has been claimed.
Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, said increasing the number of properties in the UK is currently a "matter of urgency".
He believes there is a housing shortfall of one million domiciles in the country and this will only increase if changes are not introduced.
Mr Turner also explained that building affordable housing has "huge social and economic implications" in the UK.
He said there are "four and a half million people on waiting lists, more and more people are having to stay with their families well into their 30s, plus there are the implications for jobs".
For every new house that is built, 1.5 full-time employment opportunities are created, Mr Turner stated.
His comments come after a report released by Policy Exchange today (August 31st) claimed a community controlled planning system must be introduced to increase the number of new houses built.
