Europe's biggest shopping mall opens its doors in Newham
Shopaholics living in property to rent in Newham now have the biggest shopping centre in Europe on their doorstep.
London mayor Boris Johnson and pop singer Nicole Scherzinger were on hand at the opening of Westfield Stratford City yesterday (September 13th), along with VIPs and more than 26,000 shoppers.
It shares the E20 postcode with the Olympic Park, which will host the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales was also in attendance and he said the development has helped to transform the lives of many residents in the borough by providing fulfilling employment opportunities.
"Shoppers, tourists and visitors will also bring economic benefits to Newham and will leave a lasting legacy long after the Olympics has rolled out of town," he added.
Mr Johnson was given a scare as he opened the £1.4 billion shopping centre when a glass ceiling tile dropped 30 ft and smashed in front of him.
