East London campus to be regenerated
Planning permission has been granted for a new housing development in the east London borough of Barking & Dagenham.
The former University of East London, Longbridge Road campus, will now be transformed into a development of three and four-bedroom homes as well as smaller apartments.
On top of increasing the availability of Barking & Dagenham property, the new scheme also entails the development of a brand new primary school for local residents.
London & Quadrant Housing Trust and George Wimpey East London have further outlined plans to retain the main university building at the front of the site, which dates back to 1936.
"We look forward to becoming a major part of the government's plans to deliver affordable housing as our financial strength and experience allows us to get involved in large scale delivery," commented David Montague, L&Q Group chief executive.
He continued: "This site provides a great number of affordable homes for Barking
continuing our mission to create places where people want to live."
Once completed, the regeneration project will have added some 1,042 homes to the area, including 356 affordable properties.
