Cycle hire scheme takes step closer for residents of property in Kensington
A scheme to provide bicycles for hire in London has taken a step closer with the announcement that a sponsor is being sought.
Transport for London (TFL) revealed that it is inviting companies to bid for the chance to be associated with what is being described as one of the largest sustainable transport systems in the country.
Residents of flats to rent in Kensington are likely to benefit, as the scheme is initially being rolled out in the nine Central London boroughs that make up the Zone 1 travel area.
With 6,000 hire bikes expected to be available at 400 locations, Mayor Boris Johnson remarked: "This - London's next transport icon - will be the cleanest, greenest and healthiest way of getting about the city."
Funding for the scheme has been included in TFL's budget for 2009-10, which was announced at the end of last month.
A total of £9.2 billion is to be spent - up from the previous year's £8.1 billion - as upgrades are also made to the Tube network.
