Could tenants pay more for not being green?
In order to help the UK meet its carbon emissions reduction targets by 2020, Britons should be given a carbon allowance, it has been proposed.
Lord Smith, chairman of the Environment Agency, said that this ration will mean that people who exceed this allowance could face fines in order to encourage them to reduce their energy consumption and boost the efficiency of their household.
He added that it would also help people to make their own decisions on how they will amend their lifestyle to become more efficient.
However, commenting on the news, Philip Sellwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust, said it was important to educate Britons on how to lead more sustainable lives, before suggesting that people will be fined for not going green.
Those looking for flats to rent in Kensington or another part of London may therefore wish to ask landlords what measures are in place to ensure the property is as energy efficient as it can be.
