Barking residents to check out Beam Parklands?

Barking residents to check out Beam Parklands?Beam Parklands offers residents in Barking and Dagenham plenty to do this spring.

The area - which was previously an industrial wasteland - has been transformed into wetlands that can be enjoyed by the people living in the area. It has picked up the Best Use of Brownfield Space accolade from the Brownfield Awards and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management Living Wetlands Award. The quality of green space could appeal to anyone seeking flats to rent in Barking.

Water voles and great crested newts are among the rare species that people can see at the site, which stretches for 130 miles south from the Bull roundabout in Dagenham. Park ranger Ruth Clarricoates observed individuals will have a good time if they visit the location.

"There's always plenty going on around the park for people to get involved with. Much of it is free for residents, including guided walks, cycling and conservation projects," she added.

Ms Clarricoates continued by saying visitors will not have far to go if they want to see some of the "rare wildlife and great views" on offer. She also leads the popular family walk every Monday.

Michaela Allen is one of the mums who goes on the weekly stroll. "It's a good start to the week. I like to get out and about ... I enjoy coming as I get to meet others and it's nice to go walking in a group rather than alone."

The Beam Parklands project is a multi-million pound scheme that seeks to provide better facilities for its users. As well as this, it is looking to deliver better flood protection and improvements to the biodiversity of the area.

In order to ensure its success, cooperation has come from the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, the Environmental Agency, the London borough of Havering, the Land Restoration Trust and the London Development Agency.

The European Development Fund allocated £1.5 million in funding, while the Veolia Cleanaway Trust contributed £250,000.
