Art competition launched in Newham

Art competition launched in NewhamPeople living in property to rent in the London borough of Newham are being invited to enter an art competition.

The competition involves creating a memorial to celebrate Joan Littlewood, who, along with Gerry Raffles, saved the Theatre Royal Stratford East from demolition in the late 1960s.

Judges are looking for entries that capture Ms Littlewood's spirit and character.

Councillor Conor McAuley, Newham Council's executive member for regeneration and strategic planning, said: "The memorial will act as a reminder of how Joan helped to put Theatre Royal Stratford East on the world stage."

He went on to say that it will form an "important part" of the council's efforts to improve the area for both residents and visitors.

Earlier this month, Studio Egret West was announced as one of the winners of a competition to regenerate derelict sites in the Royal Docks and Canning Town.

It proposed building a floating swimming pool in Pontoon Dock made from seven re-used barges.
