Govt rental cap 'may encourage people to look at flats in London'
People in Bristol may be tempted to look for cheap flats to rent in the London borough of Hammersmith following the government's decision to change the amount landlords are permitted to charge claimants.
The city's Evening Post newspaper reports that many families in the region may be affected by the coalition government's decision to cap payment rates at £85 a week.
As a result, ministers have admitted people may be forced to move unexpectedly, which may see them consider flats to rent in London.
However, the government also claims the unemployed will be encouraged to look for employment if they are forced to move into cheaper accommodation, the publication continues.
A spokesperson from the Department of Work and Pensions said: "Hard working individuals and families will no longer have to subsidise people living in properties they themselves could not afford."
This news comes after head of Knight Frank residential research Liam Bailey said the government's proposed changes to capital gains tax may affect the rental sector of the housing market.
