2nd entrance at London Fields station set to benefit Hackney residents
Residents living in property to rent in the London borough of Hackney, as well as others in the area, are set to benefit from the creation of a second entrance at London Fields station.
Councillor Feryal Demirci officially opened the new entrance, which will make it easier for users to access areas located close to the park near the station.
There have been a range of different improvements carried out at the travel hub over the past few months, including the installation of both internal and external CCTV cameras and new information boards.
As well as this, there are new departure boards being erected, new platform seating being installed and direction signs.
It is hoped the improvements will help encourage more people to use the station. Over the past 15 years, the number of commuters has risen ten-fold.
Hackney Council is also trying to convince people to opt for public transport over private cars, which will help reduce congestion in the area, boost air quality and lower CO2 emissions.
"Residents and visitors to the area have demonstrated a need for the enhancements at London Fields station through a continued growth in the number of users, even at weekends, and the works have been supported by the council," said Ms Demirci.
The council used funds obtained through Section 106 agreements for the project, as well as contributions from new developments in neighbouring areas to invest in the improvements at the station.
Andrew Goodrum, customer services director at National Express East Anglia, said the new entrance will make the station "more accessible" for customers.
"Together with the new customer information screens and signage [it] will provide an enhanced level of information for everyone who passes through the station," he added.
Recently, Hackney residents were warned by the borough's Trading Standards team to be alert and aware of a council tax scam in the area, which sees people calling residents, pretending to work for the council.
