Young people should be gas safe
Young people preparing to move into rented accommodation to attend a university course have been urged to ensure they keep their own safety in mind.
The Sunderland Echo reports that individuals who are set to be living independently for the first time may not realise the risks that gas appliances can pose.
Indeed, United Utilities' safety manager Mike Queenan said: "It is your landlord's responsibility to make sure gas appliances in rented homes are serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
"Ask to see your landlord's certificate which proves that appliances in their property are safe."
Such a certificate can give tenants the peace of mind that they are not at risk of one of their gas appliances setting on fire, exploding or leaking carbon monoxide.
This news may be welcome by people looking for flats to rent in Wandsworth and other parts of London.
Tenants may also wish to check that their landlord contacts a Gas Safe registered engineer to carry out any work.
