Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens relaunched by Paul O'Grady
TV personality Paul O'Grady has helped those living in flats to rent in Vauxhall celebrate the re-opening of one of the area's historic public spaces.
The comedian and presenter joined Lambeth Council leader Steve Reed, MP Kate Hoey and local residents' group leader Eamonn McMahon in cutting the ribbon on the restored Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens last week.
Working in conjunction with the Friends of Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens group, Lambeth Council has conducted a £200,000 rejuvenation scheme for the public space, which includes the introduction of new sports pitches, improved paving, tree planting and better lighting, as well as enhanced sight lines.
Meanwhile, an additional entrance has been put in place on Kennington Lane, framed by two monumental columns that light up in various colours at night as a welcoming sight for visitors.
Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens' history dates back to the 1600s but was levelled to create new housing in the 19th century, before being restored as a public space in the 1970s.
O'Grady agreed to attend the event due to his strong links to Vauxhall, having performed regularly in the guise of his comedy alter-ego Lily Savage at Royal Vauxhall Tavern for eight years on his way to achieving national stardom.
He said: "I'm really honoured to be asked to be here and it's fantastic to see people round here really care about the area, so congratulations to the Friends and the council and everyone else who's been involved in this project for all their brilliant work."
Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens has reverted back to its original name following the renovation, having previously been known as Vauxhall Spring Gardens.
It is hoped that it can once again be used as a venue for cultural events and celebrations of arts and music, just as it was during its heyday in the early parts of the 1800s.
