Richmond council to advise takeaways on healthier meals
Residents of flats to rent in Richmond are to see meals served by local takeaways becoming healthier under a new council pilot scheme.
The local authority is visiting up to 50 takeaways and food shops to explain how they can make their products better for the body and less likely to increase the risk of obesity, stroke or heart disease.
For example, establishments could be called upon to utilise less salt, switch their ingredients or cooking oil for less fatty options or offer healthier versions of meals on their menu.
The overall aim of this programme - which is part of the London-wide Healthy Catering Commitment scheme - is to ensure that schoolchildren can have access to nutritious meals during their lunch breaks.
Virginia Morris, Richmond Council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "If we can nudge takeaway owners in the right direction by showing how they can help keep their customers healthy without spending extra on ingredients, then it's good news for everyone."
Earlier this month, the council welcomed news that the borough is being allocated £3.9 million in government funding to help meet demand for school places across the area.
