Redevelopment projects to create 3,000 homes in Wandsworth

Redevelopment projects to create 3,000 homes in WandsworthNearly 3,000 homes are to be constructed in London's biggest redevelopment zone.

Plans have been approved for two projects at Nine Elms in Wandsworth. The first programme, dubbed One Nine Elms, will see an outdated office block replaced with a thriving housing development, while shops, cafes, bars and restaurants are also going to be built to add to the environment.

Two new mixed-use tower blocks are going to be built to provide up-to-date accommodation to the area. The benefits could be far-reaching in the borough and mean property to rent in Wandsworth may become more popular.

Wandsworth Council's planning chairman Councillor Nick Cuff told 24dash the scheme is going to "create homes, new open spaces and new job opportunities for local people".

"By the time the process is complete this old industrial area will have become an ultra-modern district on the South Bank, complete with new parks, a public market, two more Tube Stations, new cultural attractions and all sorts of exciting new businesses. It will be a remarkable transformation," he added.

As well as this, the New Covent Garden Market scheme has also been given the go-ahead by the local authority. This will see the location completely overhauled, as houses, a hotel and amenities will replace areas no longer needed for the market's operations. This development is going to safeguard over 2,500 jobs at the location.

It comes after Newlands Hall in Putney Vale, Wandsworth, was significantly refurbished. Some £150,000 was invested in the programme and it means the local residents' associations will have somewhere to hold meetings. A community garden has been landscaped, while a kitchen, toilets and a new ceiling were also installed.

Councillor Paul Ellis, Wandsworth's cabinet member for housing, said he hopes the local community will enjoy the facility and that it acts as a hub for both young and old people. He added the area can look forward to a "bright new future" as a result of the improvements being made.
