New mayor of Merton announced
Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender has been unanimously elected as the new mayor of Merton.
Ms Lewis-Lavender, a conservative councillor for West Barnes, will work to improve the area for those living in flats to rent in the London borough of Merton and other types of property.
She thanked all of her councillor colleagues for electing her as mayor of Merton.
"I am very excited about the forthcoming year and value the responsibility of being first citizen for the London borough of Merton," Ms Lewis-Lavender added.
She went on to say that she is looking forward to involving local residents in a number of "exciting, fun and family-friendly events" over the coming year.
Councillor Chris Edge, representing Dundonald Ward, has been elected as deputy mayor for 2011/12.
It is currently Foster Care Fortnight and Merton Council has been called on those living in the area to consider fostering as a possible career option.
