Audition dates for Wandsworth 2011 Young Performer comp announced
Parents with musical children living in property to rent in Wandsworth may want to put their offspring forward for the borough's 2011 Young Performer competition.
Run by the council's arts team in partnership with Battersea Arts Centre, Bigga Fish and the Wandsworth Youth Service, the event is open to 14 to 19-year-olds who live, work or go to one of the schools or youth clubs in the area.
Previous participants include this year's X Factor contestant Derry Mensah and Joshua Osho, who scooped the Young Performer title in 2006 and is now on the brink of an exciting music career, with international agencies interested in his work.
Young Performer 2011 is an opportunity for teenage singers, dancers, poets, musicians, bands and comedians to showcase their talents, with a tailored package of professional development opportunities on offer for this year's winner.
Three auditions are scheduled, which are free to attend and are managed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The first is on Wednesday October 12th between 17:30 and 19:30 BST at the Training and Resource Centre on Alma Road.
After that, the second is at Tooting Hub on Beechcroft Road on Thursday October 20th at the same time, with the final chance on Saturday October 29th between 12:00 and 16:00 BST at Battersea Arts Centre.
Contestants will need to be available, if selected, on Saturday 12th and Saturday 26th November for the next round.
The final part of the competition will be on Saturday December 10th at Wandsworth Civic Suite.
Last year, almost 200 teenagers took part in Young Performer, with the first prize leading to performance opportunities across the borough.
Sutton Council recently announced it is launching a new democracy award in the borough's secondary schools to help encourage local teenagers to get involved in youth politics.
