Richmond drivers offered phone parking scheme
The London borough of Richmond-upon-Thames has become the latest to offer the RingGo phone parking service.
Residents can now pay for on and off-street parking by calling a number from their mobile phone and charging it to their credit or debit card.
Cabinet member for traffic transport and parking at Richmond Council David Trigg explained that the use of phones offers an "excellent alternative" for motorists.
"Some may not wish to use the technology and paying with coins is still an option. But many people don't carry so much change now," he remarked.
And he added that the local authority ultimately hopes to extend the service in order to link it to emissions - improving the environment by encouraging people to drive cars that pollute less.
Barnet Council introduced a trial of the RingGo system in September of last year, with the aim of giving motorists an effective way to make cashless payments.
