A kick out from the plush world of Holland Park and Notting Hill, and just up from the busy Hammersmith, Shepherds Bush is its own little world, with a character all its own, a little village just under the Westway. This is very different to most of West London, in which you quickly forget the proximity of the main road, and all the better for it.
A very varied area, Shepherds Bush is full of a startling variety of places to eat, with restaurants catering to every taste, particularly Lebanese and Middle Eastern, as well as Caribbean. It's a distinctly cool place to be, with its energetic tension between the thriving shopping centres to one side of the Green and on the other side, cool, laid back venues for music, bars and gastropubs. Trendy shops in places sit amongst world famous places like the Shepherds Bush Empire. Meanwhile out to the West sits the pretty Ravenscourt Park, which along with the Green itself gives inhabitants plenty of walking space.
Though it is slap bang between Chiswick and Holland Park/Notting Hill (and much favoured by those who cannot afford the Hill but want its variety and energy) Shepherds Bush, centred on its busy Green, feels very different from them. Its property is a huge range. There are great roads of Victorian terraces, many with conversions - partly due to the areas ongoing popularity with the young, with first timers and with media and creative workers who work at the BBC amongst other places) - but a lot of these flats are also located in the White City area, the HQ of the BBC. Out towards Chiswick, houses tend to be larger and more like that of the westerly neighbour, whilst in the north the best deals are to be found.
This is a wonderfully energetic, connected and cool place to be that's genuinely different and vibrant, with no pretension. It's got houses that cater for first timers and growing families, as well as to single professionals.
