Young Londoners' drug use declining, report finds
Efforts to tackle drug use among young people in London are proving successful, new figures have confirmed.
A report by the Greater London Alcohol and Drug Alliance indicated that the proportion of youngsters living in the capital that took any drug was 17.9 per cent in 2007-08 - down from 20.3 per cent two years earlier.
In addition, those aged between 16 and 24 taking cocaine fell by around a third, from 7.1 per cent to 4.7 per cent.
As a result, drug and alcohol consumption was shown to be lower in the capital than in the rest of the UK, a finding welcomed by Mayor Boris Johnson.
"Fewer young Londoners are using drugs but we can't be complacent," he said, adding that "drug possession will not be tolerated" and police arrests are rising as a result of renewed efforts to combat offences.
Last month Mr Johnson revealed that over 240 young people had responded to a call for ideas to help tackle youth crime in the capital.
