TfL 'improving the environment'
London residents are benefiting from reduced carbon emissions, Transport for London's (TFL) latest report has revealed.
According to the body, several environmentally-friendly achievements were made in the last year, including the launch of the low-emission zone - the largest of its kind in the world.
Two million fewer car journeys were made as a result of school travel plans, while carbon dioxide emissions per Tube passenger were lowered by five per cent.
Peter Hendy, TFL commissioner, noted that the body is playing a key role in enhancing the environment for those living in the capital, as well as tackling climate change.
"This report illustrates the progress we are making across the transport system by, for example, improving energy efficiency across the Tube network and investing in technology such as hybrid and hydrogen buses," he said.
Earlier this month TFL revealed plans to have 56 new hybrid buses on the road by the end of Januay 2009.
