Tenants warned about 'unscrupulous' landlords
There are thousands in tenants of property to rent in London and the rest of the UK who are using "unscrupulous" landlords, according to the National Landlords Association (NLA).
Some property owners are "passing themselves off" as members of the various professional associations for the sector, even if they are not affiliated to these groups in any way, the NLA said.
To help tenants of flats to rent in Croydon or property to rent in other parts of the country, the association has established an online database that shows all NLA members.
People can log on to the internet and see whether the person responsible for the property they live in is registered with the national body.
David Salusbury, Chairman of the NLA, said that the database provides tenants "with a level of security that a landlord is bound by certain standards of practice".
He added that landlords can show they are reputable by putting their names on the list.
Earlier this year, the Association of Residential Letting Agents announced a new scheme that will monitor companies working in the letting industry.
