'Roads now safer' in Merton
The borough of Merton is being recognised for the steps it has taken to improve the safety of its roads.
A pair of initiatives has been commended by the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award, as child casualties in the area have dropped dramatically.
In 2006 there 15 incidents, but last year there was just one.
Merton Council has attributed this to its Child Pedestrian Programme, which provides training for those between the ages of five and nine.
And the borough's Where I Want To Be project is also to be recognised for the training it provides in road safety for disabled and special needs adults.
William Brierly, cabinet member for planning and traffic management, noted that the initiatives have helped make life safer for those living in the area.
"It is wonderful news that Merton is being recognised for its dedication to improving and making roads in the borough safer. We are making significant strides in this important area," he said.
A new centre is to be opened in Merton later this month, providing support for businesses based in the borough.
