Property to rent in Southwark 'to set example'
New property to rent in Southwark and other prospective buildings in the area will provide an environmental benchmark for other parts of London.
This comes after the mayor of the city Boris Johnson announced that Elephant & Castle in Southwark will be one of the projects involved in the Climate Positive Development Program, a Clinton Climate Initiative.
Albert Basin in East London will be the other area used in the scheme.
Residents of flats to rent in Southwark will see their area demonstrate strategies that are good for the environment, and set "a compelling environmental example for cities to follow".
Leader of Southwark Council Nick Stanton said the local authority "is regenerating some of the most deprived parts of the UK".
"We are doing it in a pioneering way that means more homes, but no more carbon emissions," he added.
Many parts of East London, including Stratford, are being regenerated ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, which the city is hosting.
