Oxford St to get £40m facelift
Central London's most famous shopping district is to receive a £40 million facelift ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, it has emerged.
Westminster Council confirmed plans to completely redesign Oxford Street, widening pavements by cutting back on the number of bus lanes and rolling out a new "cutting edge" lighting system.
The historic thoroughfare is already closed to private traffic, but under new proposals pedestrians are to be given even more leeway - with barriers being removed at the crossing with Regent Street to allow people to cross from any side.
However, plans put forward by mayor Ken Livingstone to fully pedestrianise the area have been rejected by local officials. Sir Simon Milton, leader of Westminster Council, insisted: "Wholesale pedestrianisation of Oxford Street is totally unworkable.
"These three streets (Oxford St, Regent St and Bond St) are the country's premier shopping, dining and entertainment destinations and form part of a reinvigorated and thriving local community which gives the West End its life beat. This final plan will see more than 100 actions taken to do justice to these famous streets," he commented.
The London Living Streets survey recently found that more than nine out of ten Londoners prefer Oxford Street without motor vehicles.
