New bus 'one step closer'
Transport for London has announced that a new bus for the capital is moving closer to completion.
Following the body's competition to design the new vehicle, manufacturers are now being invited to express an interest in building it.
The final design will be required to meet accessibility, safety and emissions standards and the first fleet is expected to be seen in the capital by 2011.
Kulveer Ranger, director of transport policy for the mayor, said that the plan is to deliver a solution "fit for 21st century London", using the ideas presented in the contest.
"The extent of background research, styling and innovation have provided a fantastic foundation that I'm sure bus manufacturers will be eager to take through to production," he remarked.
An exhibition is currently being held at the London Transport Museum, showcasing the 27 winning entries to the competition as well as 50 others.
Capoco Design was the joint first prize winner, along with a collaboration between Foster and Partners and Aston Martin.
